Although
many tried to dissuade him, President Abraham Lincoln insisted that
American flags made during the Civil War include stars for the eleven
seceding Confederate states. This thirty-four star flag was made by
seamstresses employed by Cook & McClain's, a garment and dye works
in Chicago, and hung from a window to celebrate Union victories. |
