The
Confederate flag, commonly called 'The Stars and Bars," was similar
in design to the United State flag. Its nine stars represent the first
southern states to secede: South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida,
Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia (Arkansas and Tennessee
would join them later).
This flag was allegedly made by "secessionist ladies" of
Washington, D.C. and presented to the 6th Virginia Cavalry who carried
it during the war. On the battlefield, "The Stars and Bars"
was easily mistaken for the U.S. flag, and the Confederacy subsequently
adopted a blue St Andrew's cross on a red background as its official
battle flag. |
