Mountain howitzer, U.S. model 1841, Cyrus Alger & Company, Boston, 1861

Smoothbore howitzers were effective weapons used by Union and Confederate artillery forces. When set at a five-degree elevation, the howitzer could throw a 12-pound shell 800 to 1000 yards and it was considered a very effective weapon. The wooden carriage could be easily disassembled and carried on mule back.
