Battle of the Iron-clads "Monitor" and "Merrimac," March 9th, 1862, by William Torgerson, 1877

The world's first battle between ironclad ships occurred at the mouth of the James River at Hampton Roads, Virginia. The encounter ended in a draw, but the Union Monitor (seen in the lower right half of the painting), was built with a low hull and revolving turret and proved to be the superior vessel. Precursors of modern-day battleships, iron-clads signaled the demise of tall-masted wooden military ships, visible on the horizon.
