The
world's first battle between ironclad ships occurred at the mouth
of the James River at Hampton Roads, Virginia. The encounter ended
in a draw, but the Union Monitor (seen in the lower right half of
the painting), was built with a low hull and revolving turret and
proved to be the superior vessel. Precursors of modern-day battleships,
iron-clads signaled the demise of tall-masted wooden military ships,
visible on the horizon.
