"Attack on Ft. Wagner," engraving by Johnson, Fry and Co., 1867, from a painting by Thomas Nast

Black soldiers distinguished themselves in combat and fought in several famous battles, including the attack on Fort Wagner, South Carolina, on July 18, 1863. The 54th Massachusetts Colored Infantry led the attack and fought courageously before the Union assault was beaten back by Confederate forces.

The 54th became famous for its bravery and impressed upon Northerners blacks' willingness to fight for their own freedom.
