United States flag, 1861
Although many tried to dissuade him, President Abraham Lincoln insisted that American flags made during the Civil War include stars for the eleven seceding Confederate states. This thirty-four star flag was made by seamstresses employed by Cook & McClain's, a garment and dye works in Chicago, and hung from a window to celebrate Union victories.
