Taking
advantage of President Lincoln's order, issued in September 1863, to sell
twenty-acre plots of land to black heads of family for not less than $1.25
per acre, eighteen freedpeople (seventeen men and one woman) selected plots
on the John F. Chaplain plantation for purchase.
