The Evacuation of Richmond, Virginia, lithograph by Currier & Ives, 1865
In Richmond, retreating Confederate troops set fire to ammunition supplies, setting off explosions that turned the city into a burning inferno.

As seen in this dramatic image, thousands of people fled the city on foot, while others, including Jefferson Davis and most of his cabinet departed on a special train.
