After
capturing Atlanta on September 1, 1864, General William
T. Sherman led Union forces on a "March to the Sea"
to Savannah and the Carolinas. George Barnard, officially
assigned to accompany Sherman, photographed many scenes
of destruction along the way. After the war, Barnard published
them in a volume entitled Photographic Views of Sherman's
Campaign, recognized as one of the most valuable documentations
of the Civil War.
Note
that while Sherman's troops forced the evacuation of Charleston
early in 1865, they were not responsible for the destruction
depicted in the photographs above.
