More
soldiers were killed and wounded at the Battle of Antietam (or Sharpsburg,
as the South called it) than the deaths of all Americans in the Revolutionary
War, War of 1812, Mexican War, and Spanish-American War combined.
In one day of fighting, nearly 6,000 men were killed and 17,000 wounded,
a toll four times the American losses on D-day in World War II. The
dead, one survivor recalled, lay three deep in the field, mowed down
"like grass before the scythe."
September 17th, 1862 remains the bloodiest day in all American history. |
