Gen. George B. McClellan, c. 1862 Map of the Antietam Battlefield, by Lieutenant William H. Wilcox, c. 1862

In September 1862 the Confederate army under General Robert E. Lee invaded Maryland and met General George B. McClellan and the Union forces near the village of Sharpsburg, along Antietam Creek. A fierce battle ensued and more than 23,000 men were killed or wounded, the single bloodiest day in American history. Heavy casualties forced Lee to retreat back to Virginia, but McClellan failed to follow up and Confederate forces lived to fight another day.
