Elmer Ellsworth, c. 1860

The North's first Civil War hero, Elmer Ellsworth was killed May 24, 1861 by James T. Jackson, proprietor of the Marshall House Tavern in Alexandria, Virginia while trying to remove a Confederate flag from that establishment. Jackson was killed by one of Ellsworth's men.

A correspondent from the New York Tribune was on the scene, and his account stirred Northern war sentiment. The story of Ellsworth's death was published everywhere, and accoding to the National Portrait gallery's citation, "Ellsworth was transformed from a dashing young soldier to a celebrated martyr."

President Lincoln, a personal friend, gave Ellsworth a White House funeral.
