Chicago Zouave Cadets Drill Team - Utica, New York by J. Graff, c. 1860

Before the war, Colonel Elmer Ellsworth (1837-61) organized the Chicago Zouaves, a precision drill unit modeled after the French Zouaves of the Crimean War. In 1860, they toured the North, staging spectacular drill exhibitions and recruiting members.

This painting by J. Graff captured their visit to Utica, New York. The painting includes members of the Chicago unit in the center, the New York unit in the rear, and the Utica brass band in the foreground.
