Letter from Abraham Lincoln to General Ulysses S. Grant, April 7, 1865
On April 4-7, 1865, President Lincoln visited the Union army front at Richmond and City Point, Virginia.

Realizing the end was near, Lincoln issued a final order to General Grant:

Lieut. Gen. Grant, Gen. Sheridan says "if the thing is pressed I think that Lee will surrender." Let the thing be pressed. A. Lincoln

Ulysses S. Grant later authenticated the letter by writing below Lincoln's signature: "The original dispatch by Mr. Lincoln to me, Apr. 7th 1865."
