John Brown, c. 1850
John Brown (1800-59), a militant abolitionist born in Connecticut, did not believe moral persuasion would convince slaveholders to abolish slavery. Instead, he advocated violence and slave rebellion. In May 1856 Brown and four of his sons killed five proslavery settlers at Pottawatomie Creek, Kansas, during the state's civil war known as "Bleeding Kansas."
