Portrait of Abraham Lincoln, by Thomas Hicks, 1860
Abraham Lincoln posed for this portrait in 1860, the year he was nominated for the presidency. His appearance had not changed much from 1858, when he ran against Stephen A. Douglas for the Senate. Six feet four inches tall, Lincoln was lean but muscular and had coarse black hair and gray eyes. His speaking manner was slow and deliberate, and his voice, though powerful, had a tendency toward shrillness. Lincoln was not a fashionable dresser like Douglas, and some contemporary accounts describe his appearance as rather homely.
