Harper's Weekly

Digital History TOPIC ID 118

Harper’s Weekly came about in 1817 in New York City when two brothers James and John Harper set up a small printing firm called J&J Harper. After being joined by three other brothers the name changed to Harper & Brothers. It was not until 1857 that the first Harper’s Weekly was published. This newspaper was meant to be read by those in the middle and upper classes and was meant for the entire family. The editorials and the cartoons and illustrations placed in the paper played a huge role in the way the country received their information.
