Lincoln's Drive Through Richmond by Dennis M. Carter, 1866
A heroic tableau depicts President Lincoln's triumphant visit to Richmond on April 4, 1865. Although the artist placed him in a carriage, Lincoln actually walked to the Confederate White House, surrounded by cheering crowds, most of them African Americans liberated from slavery by the Union's victory.
