Women
were urged, as the 1861 broadside notes, to "devote themselves,
for a time, to theS sacred service of their country" by collecting
blankets, quilts, bed clothing, pillows, socks, and slippers for the
troops. Societies were formed everywhere to produce and gather needed supplies.
In addition to these civilian efforts, more than 3,000 women served
as paid nurses on the front and in army hospitals. |
