Sojourner Truth, 1864
One of the first black women to speak publicly against slavery, Sojourner Truth traveled the abolitionist lecture circuit, speaking of her life as a slave in New York before the state abolished slavery in 1827. In 1837 she also published an account describing her life as a slave, her conversion to Christianity and her mystical religious beliefs.
