Nineteenth
century minstrel shows were a form of popular entertainment in which
white performers impersonated African Americans for white audiences.
One of the most popular minstrel characters was "Jim Crow," created
by Thomas D. Rice (after the Civil War, the term "Jim Crow" came to
mean the laws and customs of segregation). Minstrel shows remained
popular in America until the early twentieth century. |
