The
wooden model of the McCormick reaper (one-tenth actual size) and the
1853 broadside illustrate how the machine worked: as the horse-drawn
reaper rolled along, a revolving reel brought the grain within reach
of a vibrating blade that cut the stalks, which then fell onto a platform.
In 1847 McCormick moved from Virginia to Chicago and opened a factory
that produced thousands of reapers a year for farmers throughout the
country and abroad. This model was made to commemorate the reaper's
100th anniversary. |
