    The Civil War began at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. On April 12-13, 1861 Confederate troops under General Pierre G. T. Beauregard bombarded the fort commanded by Major Robert Anderson, forcing the Union held enclave to surrender.
