Militia flag of the Saluda Sentinels, made by the Ladies of Saluda, South Carolina, c. 1860
Southern secessionists often compared their struggle to the American Revolution and borrowed its symbols to embellish their own. This flag features an embroidered figure of George Washington modeled after a statue erected in Richmond in 1860.
