Lincoln campaign banner, 1860
     A hand-painted banner used by pro-Lincoln political clubs known as the "Wide Awakes," quotes the American poet and Republican editor William Cullen Bryant: "It is written in the Book of Fate, that Abraham Lincoln shall be the next President of the United States." Hannibal Hamlin, Lincoln's vice-presidential candidate, hailed from Maine.
