John Brown Meeting the Slave Mother and her child on the Steps of Charlestown Jail on His Way to Execution, lithograph by Currier & Ives, 1863, after a painting by Louis Ransom
During his trial, John Brown conducted himself with dignity, stating that his only desire was to free slaves. After he was hanged on December 2 1859, he became a martyr to the antislavery movement here and abroad. Several commemorative items were issued in Brown's name, including this lithograph, which portrays Brown as a saintly figure greeting a slave mother and child on the doorsteps of the Charlestown jail.
