Drum from the 9th Vermont Regiment, U.S. Infantry 1861-65

The drum of the 9th Regiment is decorated according to army regulations with a United States coat of arms. During the Civil War, drums were used with bugles for morning reveille and to sound out marching and battlefield commands to the troops.

The 9th Vermont Regiment was mustered into service on July 9, 1862 and saw a considerable amount of action throughout the war. They defended Harper's Ferry in 1862, guarded Camp Douglas in Chicago in 1863, and fought the Battle of Fair Oaks in 1864. Other military engagements included the sieges of Petersburg and Richmond from September 1864 until April 2, 1865; after the war ended, they occupied Richmond for several months.
