The Battle of Gettysburg, lithograph by William C. Robertson, c. 1863

In June 1863, Confederate general Robert E. Lee launched a second invasion of the North when he led the Army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania. On July 1, Confederate and Union forces met outside the small town of Gettysburg and began the greatest battle ever fought in the Western Hemisphere. Nearly 90,000 Union soldiers led by General George G. Meade battled 75,000 Confederate troops for three days before repelling the invasion and forcing Lee's army to retreat to Virginia.
