Soldier's sewing kit, 1861-65

    During the war, soldiers' sweethearts, wives or mothers supplied them with kits known as "housewives" for mending their uniforms.

This kit, used by a volunteer from New Hampshire, includes small pieces of extra material for patching worn clothing.
