The Aftermath

The Civil War settled two divisive questions - the permanence of the Union and the fate of slavery - only to raise a host of others.

  • Who should control the South?
  • What should be the status of the former slaves?
  • What labor system should replace slavery?
On these questions the contentious politics of the Reconstruction era turned.
