Annotation: Indian author and activist, Zitkala-Sa, worked at the Carlisle Indian Boarding School. Born to a white father and an Indian mother, Zitkala-Sa struggled with her own cultural identity and eventually left the school when she became a voice for Indian rights. Her outspoken views of the unjust treatment of the Indians by whites, which included her criticism of giving up one’s cultural identity, eventually caused her to leave the school which promoted the opposite—assimilation of Native Americans into white culture.
