Annotation: Author Kate Chopin (born Kate O’Flaherty in St. Louis, Missouri) lost her father when she was five years old. She was raised by strong, independent women: her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Chopin later wrote about the lives of women, mainly set in Louisiana.
