Annotation: Palmer Hayden was one of the first African American artists to portray the African American experience. Many of his works of art tell a story, mainly in the rural South and in urban New York City. His compositions often captured the human experience as his subjects attended to their daily routine. Like artist Aaron Douglas, Hayden also worked for the Works Progress Administration program (WPA), and he also worked for the U.S. Treasury Art Project.
