Annotation: This painting illustrates the Whitman Massacre of 1847. An outbreak of measles at this mission in Oregon killed many Indians. Chief Five Crows believed that the deaths were the result of a deliberate attempt by the missionaries to rid the Indians, so Chief Five Crows responded by massacring many of the missionaries.
