Annotation: This engraving by Thomas Nast was published in Harper’s Weekly. It cautions against the Free Love movement promoted by Victoria Woodhull, who was also an advocate for women’s rights. The Free Love movement rejected marriage. Woodhull is seen carrying a sign that reads: “Be Saved by Free Love,” while a burdened housewife in the background refuses to follow and claims: “"Get thee behind me, (Mrs.) Satan! I'd rather travel the hardest path of matrimony than follow your footsteps.”
