Museum Number: 196-GS-369 Annotation: This picture depicts the Tenth Ward, the heart of New York City's Lower East Side at the turn of the century. The Tenth Ward, densely populated and known as “New Israel,” was the setting for Hester Street. The area attracted Russian and other Eastern European Jews. Nearby lived a large population of Germans and smaller populations of Polish, Irish, and Italian immigrants. Hester Street swelled with peddlers, pushcarts, and shoppers on Friday afternoons, in preparation for the Sabbath. Year: 1903
