King's Row (1942)
Digital History ID 1628
Five children in an apparently ideal American small town find their lives changing as the years pass .
Length of this clip: King's Row is the story of five young people near the turn of the century in 1900 who live in an apparently ideal American small-town setting that reveals evil, sadism, cruelty, and depravity. The screenplay was based upon a novel by Henry Bellamann of the same name. The main characters are five childhood friends: a young doctor, a working class girl, a sheltered young woman, the daughter of a sadistic doctor, and a playboy. The playboy was played by Ronald Regan who would deliver an unforgettable scene of his realization that his legs have been amputated -- and his exclamation: "Where's the rest of me?" This would later become the title of 40th President Ronald Reagan's 1965 autobiography. The film's tagline was "The town they talk of in whispers." The Hays Code of 1934 required that much of the questionable, unfilmable content of the novel be modified - eliminating or seriously muting subjects such as illicit premarital sex, homosexuality, a sadistic and vengeful surgeon, and father-daughter incest leading to a murder-suicide. The wartime film was nominated for three Academy Awards but did not win..
