Overview
Of all the ideas advanced by American reformers prior to the Civil War, none was more radical than the principle that all American children, regardless of class, should be educated to their fullest capacity at public expense. Educational reformers left the nation with a lasting faith that schools provided the key to educational opportunity, to producing an enlightened citizenry, and preventing the hardening of class divisions. As a result of the reformers' efforts, the United States became one of the first countries in the world to establish a system of tax-supported, tuition-free public schools.
