Exploration 2: Who were the delegates

1. Identify the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention by answering each of the following questions:

  • How old was the delegate at the time of the convention?
  • Was the delegate born into wealth?
  • Did the delegate attend college? If so, which one?
  • What was the delegate's occupation?
  • Did the delegate own slaves?

2. Calculate:

  • Who was the youngest delegate? The oldest?
  • How many of the delegates were lawyers?
  • How many of the delegates had attended college?
  • What was the distribution of the delegates' occupations

3. Only 39 of the 55 delegates signed the Constitution. Explain why each of the others did not.

4. Rhode Island was the only state to send no delegates to the Constitutional Convention. Why didn't it send any delegates?
