Everybody
was waiting for his ship to come in. It was a sad, bitter phrase
used even by children to express the hopelessness of hoping.
In the schoolyard we said, "When my ship comes in, I'm
going over to New York and see the Yankees play." Meaning
that we never expected to be rich enough to sit in the Yankee
Stadium.
