Born in slavery: Slave narratives from the Federal Writers’ Project


Suggested Activities/Procedures:
1. Assign students to groups for a debate between slave owners (John C. Calhoun) and those who want to abolish slavery (William Jennings Bryan, Daniel Webster)

2. Research information about views of slavery. Stress the use of primary sources where possible. Some sources are the given sites, library, history museums, CD-Rom software, family stories.

3. Each group should prepare a written argument for their side.

4. Hold a debate in which each group has a designated spokesperson but everyone contributes to the debate.

5. Each student will write a written reflection about what they have learned about slavery

Evaluation/Assessment: Written reflection will include at least 3 arguments made by each side.

Tips for the Teacher:
  1. Before beginning the project, check to make sure all the links work.
  2. Teachers remember each group should prepare a written argument for their side.
  3. During the debate, each group has a designated spokesperson, but everyone must contribute to the debate. The teacher acts as a facilitator.
  4. Each student is to take notes and after the debate, the student will write a written reflection about what he/she has learned about slavery.
  5. The written reflection will include at least 3 arguments made by each side.
