The Riots in New York: the Mob Lynching a Negro in Clarkson Street, engraving from Illustrated London News, 1863
In July 1863, the introduction of military conscription touched off a four-day riot in New York City.

Angry mobs attacked draft offices, industrial establishments, and the city's free black population. Their actions included the lynching of many African Americans and burning down the Colored Orphan Asylum.
