An
obscure artist portrayed Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Chicago as
he appeared in the 1850s. Douglas, known as 'The Little Giant," was
barely five feet four inches tall; he had a massive head, broad chest
and shoulders, and short legs. But he made up for his size with energy,
self-confidence, and a commanding voice. Unlike Lincoln, Douglas wore
fashionable attire. Throughout the campaign he appeared in a ruffled
white shirt, dark blue closely buttoned coat, light trousers, well-shined
shoes, and a wide-brimmed white felt hat. |
