Portrait of Stephen A. Douglas, by Lussier, c. 1870
An obscure artist portrayed Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Chicago as he appeared in the 1850s. Douglas, known as 'The Little Giant," was barely five feet four inches tall; he had a massive head, broad chest and shoulders, and short legs. But he made up for his size with energy, self-confidence, and a commanding voice. Unlike Lincoln, Douglas wore fashionable attire. Throughout the campaign he appeared in a ruffled white shirt, dark blue closely buttoned coat, light trousers, well-shined shoes, and a wide-brimmed white felt hat.
