After
Vicksburg fell to Union forces on July 3, 1863, the U.S. Army and
the Treasury Department leased nearby plantations to Northerners and
loyal southern whites, with black laborers receiving wages set by
military commanders. Occasionally African Americans were permitted
to farm on their own. This map denotes the location and size of available
parcels of land.
