Albert Sidney Johnston, engraving, 1861

A veteran of the Black Hawk and Mexican wars, Albert S. Johnston (1803-62) was considered to be one of the Confederacy's most important officers. After being hit in the leg at the Battle of Shiloh, he bled to death before others realized the serious nature of his wound.
