First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas), July 21, 1861, engraving from Le Monde Illustre

The first major battle of the war took place in Virginia at Bull Run, or Manassas Creek to the Confederates whose victory boosted Southern confidence and dispelled Northern notions of quick victory.

During the heat of battle, Confederate General Thomas J. Jackson "stood like a stone wall" against enemy fire, thus gaining his legendary nickname. About 400 Confederate and 625 Union soldiers died at Bull Run.
