"The Lost Cause," lithograph by Currier & Ives, 1871
Shortly after war ended, the South began to memorialize it as a "lost cause." This lithograph, produced in the North, depicts the loss of loved ones and a way of life, symbolized by a fading Confederate flag in the evening sky.
