During
Reconstruction, sixteen African Americans held seats in the U.S. Congress.
They included senators Hiram Revels (Mississippi) and Blanche K. Bruce
(Mississippi), and congressmen James Rapier (Alabama), Joseph H. Rainey
(South Carolina) and John R. Lynch (Mississippi).
