The Stages of Migration Previous Next
Digital History ID 3302

Migration usually involves a series of distinct steps or stages. These include:
  1. The stimuli that lead individuals to migrate
  2. Preparations to move
  3. Departure
  4. The transit to a new environment
  5. Arrival
  6. Acclimation to a new location
  7. Reception of immigrants into the new environment
  8. Establishment of a new identity

Questions to think about:

  1. Do all migrants pass through each of these stages?
  2. Does this model only apply to "voluntary" migrants? Or is it also useful in understanding the experience of involuntary migrants?
  3. Are there any other stages that you would add to this list?
