Annotation: This drawing shows Fidel Castro gesturing to two beatniks in the background. The beatniks are symbolic of the 1950s Beat Generation literary movement that used exaggerated cartoon-like drawings of real-life people to reflect the sign of the times. In 1959, revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, at the age of 32, had just become Cuba’s youngest premier.
